A snowy spring makes for fun learning at home!

Well…. I’m mighty chuffed to announce that we have finally wrapped up filming for Learn Celtic Fiddle Unit 5 for advanced players! I know I have lots of students enrolled that are patiently awaiting this next chapter and it will be up and running by the 1st of June!

Last month we made our (final?) move… it’s been a busy year, leaving Turkey, living back in Nova Scotia… but alas.. we are now in Toronto, Ontario! I am excited to integrate myself into the local folk/celtic scene and look forward to collaborating with some amazing musicians here.

I was also thrilled to find out that I’ll be joining a superb group of teachers and musicians this coming July/August as fiddle instructor at The Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp in Colorado! It’s going to be a fun (and rather warm I expect!) week of tunes… my favourite part is that I’ll get to learn tunes from a wide range of players from lots of different styles… not to mention catch a few new steps along the way as well!

….. as we here in Canada seem to endlessly greet minus temperatures and snow so close to April… I shall close my eyes and dream of sunshine, beaches, and summer tunes…

At-tuned: to bring into harmony.

No word more perfectly describes the raw, acoustic and intimate musical conversation between instruments on this highly anticipated second album from Cape Breton fiddler Gillian Boucher. Following the 2009 release of her debut album Elemental, an innovative, contemporary and ground-breaking approach to Celtic music, Attuned takes listeners in a very different direction. The intricate arrangements, simplistic instrumentation and organic approach to the recording process reveal slicing fiddle playing enveloped by the rhythmic and sensitive guitar accompaniment of Seph Peters. Attuned reflects deep musical friendship, displays the evolution of the music of Gillian’s roots and creative diversity.

Born out of a desire to record what many have had the privilege of hearing, the dynamic duo of Gillian and Seph, the approach to the recording process was to preserve as much as possible the element of live performance. Simplistic instrumentation, selection of well-honed material and stepping away from over-production gives the listener something that is truly real. Only close your eyes and one feels as though the music is being played just meters away.  Even down to the art-work, a stunning creation by Antigonish native Mary Beth Carty, this is genuinely a project of skill and collaboration.

The release of Attuned will be followed in early 2014 by a DVD live concert recording of Gillian & Seph performing tracks from the new album and acoustic versions of tracks from Elemental, entitled, The Rockingham Sessions. Gearing Up for Summer!

Well, it’s that time of year again… the sun is shining and the birds are chirping in Anatolia… summer is on it’s way, and what a summer it’s going to be! It’s official folks… my time in Turkey has come to an end, and I’m relocating back to Canada!

Busily wearing my fingers to  the bone in pre-recording preparation for two albums this summer, I’m happy to announce that this fall 2013 will see the release of my new duo-acoustic album with guitarist Seph Peters and debut album for The Celtic Umbrella Ensemble! Both projects are to be recorded at fabulous Codapop Sutdios in Halifax.

I’m also delighted to announce that I’ll be making my way home to the shores of Cape Breton Island for a bit of a family reunion and tunes at the 57th Annual Broad Cove Scottish Concert! I couldn’t be more excited to join the line-up of wonderful musicians performing this year.  :)

The multi-talented Mary Beth Carty and I will also be hitting the road this August performing shows across Eastern Canada featuring a line up of traditional and original songs and compositions. We’re going to have a blast!

Exciting times ahead folks, so join the mailing list and stay tuned for details!

… and 2013 is going to be fab!

Well, I weathered the torrential rain and chilly temperatures with whiskey in hand and rang in the New Year at the Whare Flat Folk Festival in Dunedin (New Zealand) with a good group of musicians and dancing. Many thanks to the folks at the New Edinburgh Folk Club and all the volunteers who made the weekend truly special… what a great way start 2013! And here we go…..!

Preparation for some interesting developments with Learn Celtic Fiddle are underway and so are plans to film Unit 5 in Nova Scotia this summer. Stay tuned from some exciting news on that front!

The studio is where I’ll find myself for most of this summer, recording my new acoustic album and also the debut album for The Celtic Umbrella Ensemble! I can’t wait to lay down tracks of amazing music for both projects and especially hit the studio with the ‘brella girls Cassie, Maggie and Mary Beth :)

On another note, I’ve teamed up with US boutique finger-style label Candyrat Records and will be promoting shows in New Zealand and Canada for the Candyrat Guitar Night production as well as booking for some of the label’s top artists which is super fun and really exciting, so watch out for a Candyrat Guitar Night show near you!

Finished our Canadian Tour with Festival Memoire et Racines, QC!

I’m now settled back in Turkey and busy preparing for the launch of Unit 3 (Early Intermediate) & Unit 4 (Advanced Intermediate) in ‘Learn Celtic Fiddle’… so students, stay tuned! Lots to come!

This October I’ll be heading over to lovely Ireland to record my long-awaited new album due for release in Spring 2013.. can’t wait! Also, keep your eye out for an upcoming edition of ‘Celtic Life’ magazine featuring a lovely interview with yours truly :)

New Zealand – Turkey – Canada … Hello Sunshine!

Welcome Spring!

After a lovely 5 weeks touring The Land of the Long White Cloud, I was happy to get back to Turkey to catch my breath and prepare for the next bulk of shows in Canada this coming June/July. I’m kicking off my season with a Halifax show and reunion with old friend and guitarist Seph Peters, so I hope to see some familiar faces in the audience!

The Celtic Umbrella Ensemble are hitting the road again for a tour of Nova Scotia in June finishing off with the Festival Memoire et Racines in Joliette (Quebec) the end of July. While back home I’ll also be filming for Units 4 & 5 of ‘Learn Celtic Fiddle’ and working on the recording of my upcoming album. Keep checking back for upcoming shows and I hope to see you along the sandy dunes of Inverness County soon!
